The simple past tense is mainly used to refer actions or states that happened and finished in the past. To form the simple past tense, we generally add "-ed" to the base form of regular verbs. However, irregular verbs have unique forms that must be memorized. Here are the conjugation patterns:

Regular Verbs:    Base Form: work

I/you/he/she/it/we/they worked

Irregular Verbs: Base Form: go

I/he/she/it went

You/we/they went

Usage:

The simple past tense has several important uses in English:

Past Actions:

Example: Yesterday, I watched a movie at the cinema.
Example: She studied for the exam all night.

Past Habits:

Example: We often played football in the park.
Example: He always drank coffee in the morning.

Narration:

Example: Once upon a time, there lived a brave knight.
Example: The sun set, and darkness enveloped the city.

Time Adverbials:

Time adverbials are words or phrases that indicate when an action or event occurred. Here are some commonly used time adverbials associated with the simple past tense:
Yesterday    Last week/month/year     In 2005    When I was a child  A long time ago

Examples:

Positive Sentences:

I visited my grandparents last weekend.

Negative Sentences:

She didn't speak Spanish fluently.

 Interrogative Sentences:

Yes/No Questions.   did+subject+base

Did you finish your homework?
Did they travel to Europe last summer?
Did he play the guitar at the concert?
Did she write a book?

W-h Questions.     W-h question word + did + subject + base 

where did you go last week-end?
When did your father met your mother?
Why did you buy that book?
Who did you meet?
Which langue did you learn first, Arabic or English?

2.The Past Continuous Tense 



The  past continuous tense is mainly used to refer to actions or events that were in progress in the past. To form the  past continuous tense, we generally add "was or were" and "-ing" to the base form of regular verbs. Here are the conjugation patterns:

Positive Sentences:

I was reading a short story last weekend.
They were playing tennis for two hours yesterday.
She was cooking a delicious meal for dinner.
He was studying from 14:30 to 16:00 English in college.

Negative Sentences:

We weren't listening to music last night.
He was watching the movie.
Theyweren't eating breakfast this morning.
She was speaking Spanish fluently till yesterday

 Interrogative Sentences:

Yes/No Questions.   was/were+subject+verb+ing

were you doing your homework yesterday?
were they travelling to Europe last summer?
was he playing the guitar at the concert?
was she writing a book?

W-h Questions.     W-h question

word+was/were+subject+verb+ing

where were you going last week-end?
When was your father smoking a cigarette?
Why were you reading that book?
